The Covenant has collapsed after a long, brutal war that saw billions slaughtered on Earth and her colonies. For the first time in decades, however, peace finally seems possible. But though the fighting's stopped, the war is far from over: it's just gone underground. The UNSC's feared and secretive Office of Naval Intelligence recruits Kilo-Five, a team of ODSTs, a Spartan, and a diabolical AI to accelerate the Sangheili insurrection. Meanwhile, the Arbiter, the defector turned leader of a broken Covenant, struggles to stave off civil war among his divided people.

Across the galazy, a woman thought to have died on Reach is actually very much alive.  Chief scientist Dr. Catherine Halsey broke every law in the book to create the Spartans, and now she's broken some more to save them. Marooned with Chief Mendez and a Spartan team in a Forerunner slipspace bubble hidden in the destroyed planet Onyx, she finds that the shield world has been guarding an ancient secret – a treasure trove of Forerunner technology that will change everything for the UNSC and mankind.

As Kilo-Five joins the hunt for Halsey, humanity’s  violent past begins to catch up with all of them as disgruntled colony Venezia has been biding its time to strike at Earth, and its most dangerous terrorist has an old, painful link with both Halsey and Kilo-Five that will test everyone’s loyalty to the limit.

Welcome to OTR Reviews, my first audiobook review.

My name is Patrick Bast, I am an Over The Road (OTR) truck driver and travel throughout the 48 continuous states, live in Las Vegas, Nevada when I actually get home.

When I was asked to be a guest reviewer for RBTLReviews for Halo “Glasslands” I jumped on the opportunity. As a driver, I don’t have a lot of time to read, so the audio book was the perfect option for me.

I give the audiobook "Glasslands" a positive 3.5 stars...

I am a huge Halo video game fan, and have purchased several of the Halo books by various authors, but until now have only read the first one, therefore my less than perfect review is partly because of this fact.

I found "Grasslands", to be well written, and Karen's writing style to be descriptive as to pull me into the story line, as I remembered the various characters from the games.  I really enjoyed the narrators ability to change his voice when the human and Covenant characters were talking, this helped me visualize what was going on in my mind.

Since I have not read all of the prior books, I did have a hard time fully understanding what was going on at the various times when the story jumped from one scene to the next. The book has several different timelines happening all at once and got a little confusing at times. After about the 5th (of 12) discs, I became familiar with the changes and was then able to keep everything straight.

I really enjoyed the portions of the story with Lucy and the "Engineers". Playing the game, you don’t really get to see the Covenant side of the war and this story helped bring a deeper meaning to the Human/Covenant war from both perspectives.   I also feel that Dr. Halsey, was genuinely trying to do what was right, but got caught up in trying to make sure everyone else thought she was right, and therefore lost  sight of the importance of normal, unaltered life...and once she started down the path, she could not turn back.

By listening to this book, I now am excited to get home to get my other Halo books and read them in order, as to expand my knowledge of the entire Halo Universe, and go out and purchase any of the other books that I do not yet have.

I do not particularly like reviews that take excerpts from the book, I believe that's what the synopsis is for, and my few words are just opinion.  I think you should read/ or listen to the book. If you are a Halo fan, I believe you will enjoy the character depth that Karen writes about. The one drawback for the story for me was that there was not a lot of action in this story. However, with her writing style and descriptions, I paid attention and enjoyed the plot...I'm looking forward to the next book.
