Before the Fall ( Pride Part 1)
by Dawn Kirby

December 22

I really don’t know what else to say. My life is pretty much perfect in every way. Men love me. Women want to be me. I have more money than God and all the time in the world to spend it. I have a beautiful penthouse in one of the most exclusive buildings in town so I’m close to school. Not to mention close to the mall. My car was special ordered and imported directly from the manufacturer. Daddy paid a little extra to rush the deadline so I’d have it by my sixteenth birthday.
I look like a princess and Daddy treats me like one. Like every princess, I don’t have a care in the world.  He pays my bills. He hires people to clean my house, cook my food and do my shopping. Well, the shopping I don’t like to do.
Mom says everything could change soon, but I think she’s just being paranoid. She’s always been that way. Or so Daddy says. He says she doesn’t understand how business works. You see, backroom deals and under the table slights of hand happen all the time. If nobody gets hurt, what’s the big deal?

December 25

Daddy left yesterday. He said it was a business trip, but his secretary didn’t know anything about it when Granddad called to see when his flight was expected to be in. Mom’s tried to call him, but so far he hasn’t answered. Between you and me, I think he’s having an affair. Not that I blame him. Mom isn’t exactly the trophy wife he deserves. She just doesn’t take pride in her appearance the way I do.
Her nails look horrid. She doesn’t even care that the gray in her hair is taking over. She won’t even bother with make up these days. She says she’s so stressed over daddy’s business deals; she can’t focus on anything else.
On the plus side she’s lost a ton of weight. I’m even thinking about trying her diet. If you can call it that. One meal a day, if that. Whatever! It works!
Of course her doctor doesn’t think so. He told Daddy on her last appointment that she needed less stress. She’s the one stressing daddy out, but let’s blame the man.  Typical.
Maybe a divorce isn’t such a bad thing. Mom could find somebody else to nag and Daddy could find someone who actually appreciates the life he can give her. Maybe she’ll be half his age and we can be friends. Wouldn’t that be something?!

December 29

The cops were here today. Still no sign of Daddy. Mom is sick with worry and I am too. They think he ran away. Why would he though? He’s done nothing wrong. I still think he’s got a girlfriend. If he’s smart, he’s on some island somewhere wining and dining her.
My best friend thinks I’m right. She told me so while we were at the spa yesterday. I want to look my absolute best when he finally does come home. It’s bad enough he’ll come home to the hag he’s married to.

January 1

Everybody’s talking about Daddy. They say he took money from people. They say he took it and ran. It’s all over the papers. I can’t turn on the TV without hearing about it.  I don’t think he did, but he’s still AWOL and until he comes home, things won’t be right.
What does that mean for me?

January 4

The credit cards and accounts have been frozen. They made mom leave Daddy’s house. They say I may have to leave mine. They took my car yesterday. I’ve had to resort to using Uber to get anywhere. I don’t know how long that’s going to last though. They expect to be paid in cash when your cards don’t work. You’d think they’d be able to look at me and see that I’m good for it.
I mean, yeah they’d have to wait for Daddy to come home and straighten things out, but he’d make sure they got more than enough for taking such good care of his princess.

Daddy called. My life is over.
