Pros and Cons of Book Marketing for You As An Author?
Cons:
1. I hate asking people for help. I’m not sure when it happened, but somewhere along the line I developed an aversion to asking people for help. I’ll do it when absolutely necessary but afterwards I usually end up with a general feeling of ick that lingers with me for days, sometimes weeks. So anytime I have to ask someone to post something or do something to help me out marketing wise… I feel so dirty! Eep!
2. I don’t like drama. It seems wherever there are creative type people…bam…drama. I try to stay out of it and keep to myself, and there is where the problem lays…I keep to myself, therefore I don’t network the way I should. And for some reason that generally rubs people the wrong way and causes me exactly what I don’t want…drama. Ugh. Drama is never good for book marketing.
3. I’m super shy. Over the years I’ve developed a public persona that I’ve perfected through years of bartending. But underneath it all I’m still the shy little girl who teachers used to ask my mom if I ever talked. Even the thought of marketing and promoting makes me break into a cold sweat.
4. I don’t like to talk about myself. I’d rather post tons of pictures about my dogs and other various things than talk about my books, which feels like an extension of me. Not talking about my books at all is generally bad for marketing.
5. I have no filter. This is a potential landmine waiting to be stepped on for me. I say, or type, as the case may be, exactly how I feel in the moment. I may change my mind and want to take it back later, but unfortunately I’m not H.G. Wells and I don’t own a time machine. Therefore, I feel like it’s only a matter of time before I make a complete public ass out of myself with something and completely wreck whatever is going on marketing wise at the moment.
6. I like things simple. I always hear this gi-normous list of sites you should be on to market and promote as an author: Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, etc. I’m not a bells and whistles kind of girl. The fact that I actually have a website, blog, Twitter account etc. is a huge deal for me. I mean HUGE! I even recently deleted my Facebook author profile in favor of just using a personal account. I figure people can friend request me there and it’s one less thing for me to have to worry about. I wish I only had to have a website… I miss times when I had nothing, honestly.

Pros:
1. Ummm… hold on… I know there are some pros. *scratches head * Oh yes! I’ve met a ton of great people. Through marketing and promoting I’ve had the privilege to meet a ton of great bloggers and fans. People that I never would have talked to in a different situation. The book-y community is an awesome place, when I actually interact with it. And even though my cons list is longer than my pros list, I think my one pro definitely outweighs all the cons in this instance. *sappy moment * I feel like we should all group hug and sing some emotionally wrenching songs about friendship or something. No? Okay… well… I guess that concludes my list then. *runs and hides *
