A chilly breeze nipped at our noses. I tugged at my bun and let
my silky waves cascade around my shoulders to keep my neck warm. The way Rudy
studied the gentle sway of my hair warmed me even more.
“It’s the last night of dusk,” I said,
staring out at the byzantium sky. Traces of muted cerise and dulling mustard
blended together, fading fast into a quickening chocolate darkness beyond a
sugary shower of millions of brilliant stars. “By the time we wake up tomorrow
morning, it’ll be night. That sounded strange, didn't it?”
“That’s hardly the strangest thing about
this place.”
“In about a week, the moon will come out
and stay for two weeks straight. C'mere ” I gently took his hand in mine. He
stiffened, like maybe he thought I was going for a cheap tickle shot, but then
relaxed and let me lead him to the stable.
The girls all perked up at the sound of our
footsteps. Except for Cupid. She was the youngest and still always very active
during the day, so she was already curled up, snoring away like a big bear.
Comet tapped her hoof to let me know she was hungry. I rushed over and petted
the bridge of her nose to calm her.
Rudy stayed rooted by the door, as if his
feet were held in place by a giant magnet. A dim light bounced in from the
starlit snow outside. I could just make out the hint of a faint, happy boyhood
memory pouring back into him, lifting his spirits, ever so briefly, despite his
efforts to fight it. He silently counted out all eight of the doe. Dasher and
Dancer, Prancer and Vixen. I could tell he knew them all. “But where’s…?” He
pointed to his nose.
“Oh, come on. Don't tell me you…” I couldn't believe what he was asking. “Hello? This is reality. Think about it,
Rudy. A deer with a glowing red nose?” I belly-laughed loudly. Rudy still hadn't moved from his post. “ You're allowed to come in, you know. Come say hello
to Comet.”
He took a cautious step forward. Blitzen
wheezed at him, and he two-stepped away from her.
I chortled, then reached into to the feed
sack on the wall, handing Rudy a cocoa bean the size of a kiwifruit. “Go on.
Feed her.”
“Am I gonna get in trouble for this?”
“Watch me.” I held the cocoa bean in my
flat palm and shoved it under Comet’s nose. She slurped it up like a vacuum
cleaner, then licked the remaining residue off my hand. “Gee, whiz, Comet. Did
Frostbite skip you at lunch today or something? Try chewing next time, why
don’t you?”
I fetched another and gave it to Rudy.
“I can’t believe I’m doing this,” he said.
He repeated exactly what he’d seen me do, only slower. This time Comet picked
up the cocoa bean in her teeth and chomped away. Rudy wrenched his hand back
while he still could and wiped the reindeer slobber off on his jeans.
“See?
You do have Christmas Spirit after all, Rudy Tutti.”
North Pole High was a beautifully written book that gives a new take on what happens in high school by giving it a little bit of a Christmas twist. Candycane Claus is the only daughter of Santa and she is the “IT” girl at North Pole High. This book is written from her point of view is her way of telling what happened when the new boy Rudy Tutti moved into town. Candy is the popular girl at school she got the perfect boyfriend Tinsel, her dad runs the town, and she has best friends that are by her side. Throughout the book easy to see how she grows and changes from the beginning of the book when she wants nothing to do with Rudy to the end of the book where you can see how she grows as a person and as a caring individual. UCSC overcome shuttles that can be compared to what high school students all over the world their references to things that happen with high school students here but in a way that makes them not as harsh for the younger crowd deal with without taking away from the story. The author is able to draw you in and make you feel like you're really there with the use of the descriptions of all the different aspects of the North Pole. Candy’s memoir gives us a little peek as to what life in the North Pole can really be like can really be like. The writing style is the ability to capture the reader's heart
