.: A Gothic Novella :.

Sometimes, life and love can follow the most obscure paths, just as they did for Elisa.
Her life becomes a dark, cold, lonely cage the day the Devil takes her as his wife. He robs her of almost everything she holds dear: her health, her wealth and what is left of her family.
Trapped between the nuances of life and beyond-life, Elisa finds herself struggling for a better tomorrow. With her health deteriorating, how will she summon the courage and strength to stand her ground? And how far will she go in the pursuit of a dream?
Embark with Elisa on this puzzling Gothic adventure set in the late Victorian era, between the world of the Living and the picturesque, melancholic Duskland.

Elisa da Cunha Domingos
Is the lead female character on The Night of Elisa. In the book, she is introduced as “an unknown lady” when she is found unconscious in the woods, in the world of Duskland. As other figures of Classic Gothic Literature, Elisa progress through the story with the help of supporting characters.
Background
Childhood: Elisa was born in São Paulo, the ‘Metropololis of Coffee’, in the Republic of the United States of Brazil. Daughter of a Baron, her family enjoyed a privileged position in the society. Elisa’s mother was an extraordinary woman for her time. Even though she dedicated her full time to her household, husband and only child, she was very literate and taught Elisa to read and write at the early age of four. She died when Elisa was seven.
Adult life: Elisa and her father moved to England, to a fictional town called saint Edwidge’s Hills, a day’s travel from London. The Baron became the responsible for negotiating the expansion of São Paulo Railway’s new line for the local government in São Paulo with the suppliers in London and was there most of the time. There he also found a suitable husband to take Elisa’s hand.
Character Arc – Spoiler Alert!!!
End of the Victorian Era.
Elisa finds herself in the astral plain of Duskland during the time her physical body is in coma in the fictitious city of Saint Edwidge’s Hills, England. In Duskland, Leonhard,  rescues Elisa and takes her to his mansion. There the other inhabitants of the house, Dr. Charles and Gerania and Iphigenia, Siamese sisters, also help taking care of the sick maiden. Leonhard and Elisa fall in love.
They all discover how their lives have been taken by a single Living man: Quentin, Elisa’s husband. Elisa’s presence bring disturbance to Leonhard’s mansion, causing conflicts between him and his friends. The Siamese sisters run away, leaving Dr. Charles, Leonhard and Elisa concerned. To make matters worse, Elisa who is not dead yet, leave Duskland against her will.
Elisa’s aunt, Berenice, helps her waking from the coma, in the physical world or World of the Living. Berenice has power, richness and influence and she is also a witch. She uses it in her advantage to help rescuing Elisa. Quentin is on his way back to Elisa’s mansion to kill his wife for once and for all. Berenice and Elisa manage to escape to a faraway place, Dawn’s Inn, in the middle of nowhere.
The ladies endure the perils of the night, arriving at the Inn by dawn. Philip, the owner of the place and his son, Marcel, have been expecting them. Berenice has a plan to stay at the Inn with Elisa for one more day, so they can depart to continue their journey. Quentin discovers the plan and arrives at the Inn before the ladies could leave. Marcel takes Elisa under his protection, and escape with her through the backdoor, while Philip and Berenice try their best to slow down and deceive Quentin and his henchman.
Marcel puts Elisa in his horse and rides as far and as quickest as he can into the night, leaving Quentin behind. By the morning they arrive at a small dormitory town and stay at a one-room house, where they break in and settle for a few days. In the meantime, in Duskland, Leonhard’s afterlife has fallen into pieces. He is depressive and all he do is to lock himself in his atelier, painting Elisa as motif. Dr. Charles busies himself trying to find a solution for all problems: a way to bring Elisa back to Death. Dr. Charles and Leonhard ask the help of a Rosicrucian priest, Mr. Magnus and perform rituals to communicate with Elisa.
Meanwhile, in the World of the Living, Marcel and Elisa grow their friendship and affection as they spend time confined in the one-room house. A certain night, when Marcel is drunk and Elisa asleep, he witnesses a paranormal event which shake things between them; a message from Leonhard. Elisa’s hope of meeting Leonhard once again is resurrected. Marcel decides it is time for them to leave and come back to their families at Dawn’s Inn.
Back at the Inn, son and father, niece and aunt are reunited. Berenice receives another message from Duskland, this time sent by Mr. Magnus himself. Berenice talks to Elisa about a way to meet with Leonhard one last time. Elisa wishes to perform the ritual to bring him back – in spirit. In Duskland, the Siamese sisters apologize to Leonhard for leaving him. Leonhard and the ghosts gather in his mansion to talk about a vengeance plan against Quentin. They decide Leonhard must depart with the Siamese sisters back to the World of the Living to make the plan work.
Elisa is ready for the ritual; she and her aunt lock themselves in the bathroom at the Inn. The ritual is performed, but something goes wrong. Elisa is drained of much of her life and her condition gets worse. They were supposed to bring only one ghost back, not three, counting with the sisters. The ghosts reveal themselves to Elisa, who is the only one who can actually see and talk to them. They reveal the plot against Quentin, which Elisa is willing to take part on. Berenice do all she can to help Elisa recover and Marcel joins her on a trip back to Saint Edwidge’s Hills.
At Saint Edwidge’s Hills, Elisa, Marcel and the ghosts destroy Quentin’s properties (everything he usurped from Elisa). Elisa and Quentin confront each other. Such efforts worsen Elisa’s weak health and Marcel hurries taking her to the Hospital. Elisa dies. She and the ghosts fly back to Duskland.
