Title: Release
Author: M.R.Merrick
Series: The Protector (#3)
Genre: Paranormal/YA/Demons/Vampires/
Shifters/Witches
Publisher: Self Published
Release Date: Dec. 10, 2012

After uniting the shifters and calling in reinforcements, Chase has to face his toughest challenge yet: learning to control his emotions. But as tensions rise and his powers grow, controlling his emotions becomes the least of his problems.

Terrorized by a multi-shifter who is hell-bent on turning him, Chase questions just how far he’s willing to go to stop his father.  Meanwhile, Tiki’s virtuous nature has placed him in the middle of Vincent’s past, leaving Chase to oppose a senate of vampires and defend a demon he hates.

Trying to balance his friends, his enemies, and his inner demons, Chase is left searching for answers about the Mark, his destiny, and where he can find the next soul piece. Stopping Riley is his top priority, but as more obstacles arise, he finds himself doubting all the decisions he’s made - especially regarding Rayna.

One thing is for certain: Chase has finally realized that he doesn’t know anything. The light doesn’t always quell the darkness, the monsters don’t always stay in the shadows, and the past doesn’t always stay in the past - sometimes, the demons inside are the hardest to fight.

Did you have a playlist writing this series if so what was it and the inspiration behind each song?

The playlist for The Protector series has varied from book to book. In fact, I hardly listened to music at all with Release. I’m not exactly sure why, but for some reason music just didn’t work for the story. I had a lot invested in this book, both mentally and emotionally, and although I love music like I love to breath, I couldn’t bring myself to focus while listening to it. Every time I finished a writing or editing session, I felt drained when I was done. Release, for me, was an absolutely exhausting book. In a way I never thought writing a book would be. And it was great.
There was a pretty solid playlist for both Exiled and Shift, and there were moments (although few and far between) where I did use music in Release to help get through specific scenes.  Some songs evoke the sadness, anger, or happiness, I really needed for a scene, and that was the only time it came into play with this book.  But enough about that, on with the tunes!
There was a lot of music involved in the background of The Protector series, so I’ve only outlined the top few artists, and a few of their songs.

1. Paramore

This band was easily the driving force behind all the playlists. They had the most songs on every playlist I made for writing these books. Their sound is absolutely perfect and the lead singer’s voice just works. It often times created the pacing and emotional outlet I needed to get what I was trying to say across. The vibe Paramore gives off truly just works for the books.
I used a lot of their music while writing my books, but the most regularly used songs for me were:
·         Playing God
·         Brick by Boring Brick
·         Misguided Ghosts
·         We Are Broken
·         When it Rains
·         That’s What you Get

2. Rise Against

Rise Against wasn’t used quite as much as Paramore, and I was more selective of the songs I did use. That being said, the few songs I did have on my playlist, were powerful full me. I love the voice these songs carry, and they completely tear out the emotions I need, helping me spread them on the page.
·         Hero of War
·         Savior
·         Rumors of my Demise Have Been Greatly Exaggerated
·         Swing Life Away

3. Eminem

Eminem had a huge effect on the words I wrote. He’s a personal favorite of mine when it comes to music. I think he’s an incredible writer, and his music is the perfect example of a soul torn apart for the sake of art. His music has been with me through the best, and the very worst times in my life. And he wasn’t missing for these books either.  Although I enjoy most of his music, there were very specific songs that worked for me while writing this series.
·         Going Through Changes
·         Sing for the Moment
·         Not Afraid
·         Soldier
·         When The Music Stops
·         Till I Collapse
·         Like Toy Soldiers
·         25 to Life
Those were the top three artists for my writing playlist, but there were so many other’s that contributed too: Otis Redding, Bush, Collective Soul, Matchbox 20/Rob Thomas, I really could go on. These songs above, however, represent something special to me about the series. From this point forward, I don’t think I’ll ever hear them in the same way again. They represent something entirely different for me now: my very own creation.
