Life should've been perfect. Kate Edwards had won the heart of police detective Jared Corbett and was coming to terms with her psychic ability. Things were blissful—until the day she met Declan Brayden.

Declan also has psychic visions and wants to work alongside Kate. Kate doesn't trust the damaged and arrogant seer, but she knows combining their abilities would allow her to help more people. This becomes vital when visions of a missing fitness instructor turn into a race against time to save the girl’s life.

Review
I was so happy I got a chance to review the second book in a series I know I will love. We have good old Kate back again with her psychic prowess, but alas she hasn't yet come to terms with her psychic powers. In this novel she is just as plagued with the feelings that she can’t save them all. We also see ultra hot Jared Corbett as her now ultra hot boyfriend. Jared is great for Kate and says just the right things to her. This book is just as good, if not better than the first. Kate’s snarky comments and relentless clipped tones make me love her. She is a very human, very likable character. One of the things that struck me about the first book was realism and tangibility the characters brought. This book is no different and I can’t wait to see more from Heather Topham Wood!

Interview

We would love to welcome Heather to Read Between The Lines today. Heather thank you so much for joining us. How is your day going? Can you share a little bit about yourself with us ?

Thanks so much for having me! I’m a writer that originally started out writing non-fiction articles that has recently ventured out to the scary world of novel publishing. I have two little boys under five and writing allows me to stay home with them.

Why did you give Kate this specific gift?

Being psychic is always something that interested me. I actually went to psychics several times and I always imagined how cool it would be to see into someone’s mind.

Knowing how Kate feels about her gift, would you like to have the same abilities?

At first glance, I think it sounds a lot cooler than it would actually be. Everyone has private things they don’t want to share with people and being known as the person that could invade their thoughts is a heavy burden.

If you had to have a ‘second sight’ type of ability, would you?

Maybe, but I’m not sure if I would want to have visions of the future. I think I would obsess over what was going to happen instead of living in the now.

Do feel that Kate appreciates the magnitude of her gift?

At the beginning of First Visions, she certainly doesn’t. She shies away from being psychic and wishes her gift away. In New Revelations, she decides that she was given this talent to help people and she can no longer hide from the world.

Do you think Kate is naïve about her gift at times?

Yes! I think that’s one of the challenges she faces in New Revelations. She comes to rely on Declan (another psychic) for most of her information because she never sought out to learn more about what she could do.

Kate is SO sarcastic (which I LOVE) do you put a little of yourself into her? OR do you find yourself to be a little sarcastic too?

Kate’s sense of humor is just like mine. I don’t put all of my personality in her, but my quirky humor is definitely there.

Kate is a little whiny for her age, will we see her really mature as she accepts her gift for what it is?

She’s certainly a brat at the start of book one and I hope readers notice her growth in the sequels. My goal for her character was to make her real as possible. She’s not perfect and she’s constantly learning to accept herself and her gifts.

(This is kind of a second part for the above question)
Do you think that Kate is so immature at times because she is dealing with such a HUGE responsibility dealing with her gift?

Yes, that’s certainly part of it. Her growth is tied to both her acceptance of her gift and her ability to trust people. Her mistrust makes her try to push people away and act out in a way.

Jared Corbett is HOT, like scorching; did you have anyone in mind when writing about him?

I didn’t have a certain person in mind, but a kind of mix of my favorite characteristics. If I had to cast him, I would probably pick Jake Gyllenhaal or Henry Cavill.

Do you think that Kate’s gift will evolve in the future?

Yes! I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but that’s a plot point in the series.

Kate really goes whole hog when it comes to her visions; do you think you would distance yourself more than she does from her visions if you had them?

Distancing herself is something Declan tries to tell her to do. She has a problem with it because she feels this connection to the people in her visions. However, he warns her that getting too close could drive her crazy.

I love a good mystery with a supernatural twist; where did you get your ideas for this series?

I wrote the first chapter when I was in high school. I read it again last year and realized there was something there. I obviously changed it a lot (I was a huge fan of cramming as many adjectives as possible in each sentence), but the basic premise of a psychic and detective working together stayed the same.
